Wineries, dining, hiking, lake activities, and insider tips — from the hosts who live it
Lake Chelan is Washington State's best-kept secret — and it's getting harder to keep. Nestled in a glacier-carved valley at the edge of the North Cascades, the lake stretches 55 miles into some of the most remote wilderness in the lower 48. At 1,486 feet deep, it's one of the deepest lakes in the United States, fed by snowmelt and glacier runoff that keeps the water impossibly clear and brilliantly blue.
What surprises most first-time visitors is the weather. Lake Chelan enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year — more than most of California. The dry, warm climate creates perfect conditions for both outdoor recreation and grape-growing, which is why the valley has quietly become one of the most exciting emerging wine regions in the country. With over 20 wineries now operating in the Lake Chelan AVA, this area is drawing serious comparisons to a younger, more intimate Napa Valley.
But unlike Napa, Chelan still has that unhurried small-town feel. The wineries are close together. The locals know your name by day two. The lake is the center of everything — swimming, boating, paddleboarding, or just watching the sunset paint the valley gold from your deck. Whether you're here for a summer weekend on the water, a fall wine tour through crush season, a cozy winter escape, or a quiet spring getaway, Lake Chelan delivers.
