Things to Do in Lake Chelan in April: Spring Arrives Early

Why April is One of the Best Times to Visit Lake Chelan

Most people don't think of April as a Lake Chelan month — but that's exactly why it's so good. The crowds are nonexistent. Hotel and rental prices are at their annual low. The weather is warming into the 60s. And the landscape puts on its most dramatic show of the year: thousands of acres of apple and cherry orchards in full bloom, coating the hillsides around Manson and Chelan in white and pink blossoms.

Orchard Blossom Season

Apple and cherry orchards bloom in April around the Chelan valley — particularly in Manson, about 8 miles from downtown Chelan. This is one of Washington's most underrated spring spectacles. Drive Manson Highway and the side roads in early-to-mid April for peak bloom. There's no formal festival — just miles of blooming orchards you can pull over and photograph. The blossoms against the blue lake backdrop create scenes that rival any spring destination in the country.

Winery Reopenings & Spring Releases

Most Lake Chelan wineries reopen for the spring season in April after reduced winter hours. Many celebrate with spring release events and new vintage pours. Tsillan Cellars, Karma Vineyards, Vin du Lac, and Benson Vineyards all typically open their full tasting hours in April. No summer crowds, no reservations needed in most cases — just walk in, pour, and enjoy.

Spring Hiking

April is excellent for hiking — trails are dry, temperatures are ideal (55-65°F), and wildflowers are starting to emerge on the lower hillsides. Chelan Butte is very doable in April before summer heat sets in, and the views are exceptional with snow still on the higher peaks. Lake Chelan State Park trails are uncrowded and lush with spring growth.

April Weather in Lake Chelan

Average highs of 58-65°F in April. Nights can still drop to 40°F. Rain is possible but Chelan averages only about 10 inches of annual rainfall — drier than Seattle by a wide margin. Pack layers: t-shirt for afternoon hikes, jacket for evenings. The lake is still cold (50-55°F) — not swimming weather yet, but beautiful for kayaking in a wetsuit or simply enjoying from shore.

Practical Tips for an April Visit

Orchard peak bloom is hard to predict — watch the Chelan Chamber's website for updates, or call local farms for current conditions.

Most vacation rentals are 30-40% cheaper than July rates. April is one of the best value months to visit Chelan.

Restaurants are open but may have limited hours — call ahead, especially for dinner on weeknights.

Slidewaters waterpark doesn't open until June, so plan activities around hiking, wineries, and scenic drives.

Bring layers — mornings and evenings are still cool, but afternoons can be warm and sunny.
