Camping at Lake Chelan: An Overview

Lake Chelan has limited but excellent camping options, anchored by Lake Chelan State Park on the south shore. Camping here is different from the typical Pacific Northwest experience — expect eastern Washington sunshine, dry heat, and ponderosa pine forests instead of rainforest. The lake is warm enough to swim in from June through September, making it a true summer camping paradise.

Lake Chelan State Park Campground

The main campground in the area. Located on the south shore, about 9 miles from downtown Chelan. Sites range from primitive tent sites to full RV hookups. The park has direct beach access, flush toilets, hot showers, and a boat launch. Reservations are strongly recommended from Memorial Day through Labor Day — book on the Washington State Parks Reservations website up to 9 months in advance.

Camping at Stehekin (North End of the Lake)

For a more remote experience, take the Lady of the Lake ferry 55 miles up the lake to Stehekin, where the National Park Service operates several backcountry campgrounds. Purple Point Campground is accessible from the ferry landing — no car needed. This is a bucket-list camping experience in the heart of the North Cascades.

Other Camping Options Near Chelan

Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park, further up the south shore, has more secluded camping with good fishing access. Beebe Bridge Park (managed by Chelan County PUD) has waterfront RV and tent sites near Chelan. Both are less crowded than Lake Chelan State Park and offer a quieter alternative.

Glamping & Upscale Outdoors

If you want the outdoor experience without the tent, several private properties near Chelan offer glamping-style accommodations. Alternatively, consider a vacation rental as a basecamp for day hikes and lake activities — you get a full kitchen, a real bed, and a private hot tub while still exploring the same trails and beaches that campers enjoy.

Camping Tips for Lake Chelan

Reserve 3-6 months ahead for July and August sites — they go fast, especially waterfront spots at Lake Chelan State Park.

Summer temps regularly hit 95-100°F — bring serious sun protection, shade structures, and plan water activities for the hottest hours.

Swimming is the main activity — bring your own inflatables, water shoes, and water gear. The lake is warm and inviting all summer.

Bears are present — use the provided food storage lockers and never leave food in your tent.

Fire restrictions apply in summer — check current burn bans before going. Open fires may be prohibited during dry periods.

Cell service is limited in the park — download offline maps and let someone know your itinerary before heading out.
