Hiking Around Lake Chelan
Lake Chelan sits at the edge of the Cascades, surrounded by dry eastern Washington hills and alpine wilderness. The contrast makes for dramatic hikes — you start at 1,100 feet elevation at the lake and can climb to 8,000-foot peaks within a day. Trails range from easy lakeshore walks to multi-day backcountry routes.
Chelan Butte Trail (Best Views)
The signature Chelan hike. 7 miles round trip, 2,000 ft elevation gain, starts near downtown. The summit rewards you with 360° panoramic views of the entire lake, Columbia River valley, and Cascades. Best done early morning in summer — exposed and hot by afternoon. Moderate-difficult rating. Trail Alliance maintained and well-marked.
Lake Chelan State Park Trails
Easy to moderate trails right on the lakeshore. Perfect for families and casual hikers. Shaded forest walks through ponderosa pine, beach access, and picnic areas throughout. A great warm-up hike or afternoon stroll after a morning on the lake. Open year-round. Free with a Washington Discover Pass.
Echo Ridge Nordic Trails (Winter & Spring)
30+ miles of groomed trails in winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, located on a ridge 12 miles above the lake. In spring and fall, Echo Ridge transforms into mountain bike and hiking trails with sweeping lake views from above. A hidden gem that most visitors miss — locals consider it one of the best trail systems in the region.
Stehekin & North Cascades Backcountry
For serious hikers, take the Lady of the Lake ferry 55 miles up the lake to the remote village of Stehekin — the gateway to North Cascades National Park. Multi-day backpacking routes, waterfalls, and true wilderness await. This is bucket-list Pacific Northwest hiking. Reserve permits well in advance through the National Park Service.
Hiking Tips for Lake Chelan
Start early — trails are exposed and temperature climbs fast by 10am in summer. Beat the heat by starting at sunrise.
Carry 2+ liters of water. Most trails have no water sources, and the dry eastern Washington climate dehydrates quickly.
Download AllTrails maps offline — cell service is spotty on most trails and completely absent in the backcountry.
Rattlesnakes are present — stay on trail and watch your footing, especially in rocky areas during warm months.
Best hiking months: May-June and September-October. Summer works but the heat can be intense. Shoulder seasons offer ideal temperatures and fewer people on the trails.
Stay at Chelan Peaks Villa
